There are many different types of nursing positions available these days. Those who want to enter the nursing profession need to have a number of skills as well as attaining the appropriate grades. Nurses should have mathematic skills, be systematic and have the ability to be precise when recalling various scientific facts. A nurse must have excellent attention to detail and they above all must be compassionate and considerate when it comes to the patients in their care.

The great thing about nursing these days is that it is a job that is in big demand. Health care is something that we will always require so there will always be positions available for nurses all over the world. It is hard work but it is a very rewarding job. And if you do decide that a career in nursing is for you, then you will be pleased to know that there are various different sectors that you could go for such as pediatric nursing, critical care nursing, psychiatric nursing, trauma, clinical research and so much more. The following are a few examples of the various nursing positions available and what they involve:

Pediatric nursing. A pediatric nurse is someone who looks after those under the age of eighteen. A pediatric nurse provides care for the child and also works closely with the family in order to show the parents or guardians, how to look after the child on their recovery.

Ambulatory care nursing. When talking about ambulatory in terms of medicine, it is referring to patients who can move about. It means that they do not need assistance to get on with their day to day living. An ambulatory care nurse is responsible for assisting patients who do not have to stay at hospital for longer than 24 hours. There are many different medical and diagnostic services which must be provided by the ambulatory care nurse and the environment is quite fast paced. Those who choose to work in an ambulatory care facility must be able to multi-task.

Travel nursing. A travel nurse will usually travel to various parts of the country working for stints of about thirteen weeks at a time. There are many benefits to this job and the salary is very competitive. Those who like to see new places would really benefit from being a travel nurse.

Geriatric nursing. A geriatric nurse is one who is responsible for taking care of the elderly. Geriatric nurses must be caring and compassionate and they must be extremely patient due to the fact that elderly people can be very difficult to take care of.

Anesthetist nursing. An anesthetist nurse is probably paid one of the highest nursing salaries and this is because this is a specialized area that requires quite a bit of training. The anesthetist nurse works with a medical team and there is a lot of responsibility involved in administering anesthesia so it is a dangerous position.

Job agency nursing. There are a number of nurses who have found that they are much better at the clerical side of the job rather than the caring side and these nurses can work in staffing agencies instead. They work at recruiting nurses for organizations. They know who the best nurses for the positions available are because they already have the skills and knowledge of the profession.

Years ago, there was only one kind of nurse employed in our hospitals and she did all the duties that the post involved. However, these days the job has evolved and now there are many different types of nurse position with the duties divided up among them. A registered nurse is usually the one who supervises both the LPNs (licensed practical nurses) and the CNAs (certified nursing assistants). It is the CNA who performs most of the duties that we associate with the nursing profession. But what does this position actually involve?

A nursing assistant is usually someone who likes to care for other people. It is very important that a nursing assistant is patient and kind and who will take other people’s needs into consideration. Patients can be in a lot of pain and need to be handled properly so it is vital that the nursing assistant can be show patience and sympathy and can offer a kind word to people who are ill. No matter how uncooperative or upset a patient is, the nursing assistant must be able to stay calm and professional at all times. The nurse assistant must take care of the patient’s every need. They are in charge of the patient’s food, hygiene and their food. They also have to administer medicine and must keep a check on the patient’s condition and report to the registered nurse.

Becoming a Nursing Assistant

If you wish to become a CNA, then you will be glad to know that you can do so normally with a high school diploma. Most nursing courses will accept people provided they have this high school diploma and can pass an interview for the course. As long as you take a course with an accredited school, you can be working as a CNA within months. There are many places where you can take these courses all over the country.

It is also possible to study to become a CNA at home. There are many online courses that you can follow which will allow you to study at your own pace. Some people prefer to get on the job training in healthcare facilities such as nursing homes. This is a good way for people who do not have the money to pay the training fee as many of these healthcare facilities offer training for free or for a very low fee. However, you may have to stay working at the facility for a certain period of time after qualifying as a CNA.

Qualifying as a CNA

Once you have completed your training to become a CNA, you will have to sit the exam. The first exam is a theoretical exam while the second exam is a practical exam. If you pass these exams, you can look for work as a CNA. The normal working week for a CNA is five days per week and eight hours per day. The starting salary for a nursing assistant is roughly $10 per hour.

In what many would consider to be a man’s world, one job where the majority of positions are held by women is nursing. However, things are beginning to change slightly. Despite the fact that there are only about six percent of nursing jobs held by men, there seem to be a number of men willing to take a step towards a nursing career. The problem for a lot of men however, is that they will not pursue this career path because they feel there are still discriminatory practices taking place against male nurses.

Thankfully, these prehistoric practices are no longer the norm and there are many male nurses who are finding that they are being offered the chance to train in all the same areas as female nurses and that includes the women’s health wards and ob/gyn floors. These days men can even become midwives should they want to, which is a big change from a few years back where this would have been very difficult. Male nurses are finding that the number of people who discriminate against them because of their gender is decreasing all the time.

However, despite the advances in this area, there are still many male nurses who have had a tough time because of their chosen profession. Many men are ridiculed by their peers for choosing to work in what many consider to be a woman’s job. Male nurses often find that they don’t get the same respect as their female counterparts particularly from the older generation. Most male nurses love their job but they will admit that it comes with baggage. They do not particularly enjoy being treated like one of the girls.

The good news is that there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel, with the younger generation much more accepting of male nurses. These days nursing students don’t associate the profession with a particular gender and both male and female nursing students are seen just as nurses and not a male nurse or a female nurse. However, men wanting to pursue a nursing career need to be aware that this is a profession that is still dominated by females with 94 percent of all jobs taken by women at the moment. For that reason, it would probably not be a good career choice for a man who doesn’t usually get on well with women. It is highly likely that supervisor positions will be held by women and some men cannot cope with having women bosses.

Loretto, the company that operates a number of nursing homes for the elderly has recently hired an external management firm in order to streamline operations. However, this move is expected to cause some of the 2,000 employees of the firm to lose their jobs. Loretto spokesman, Mr. Michael Connor said that the company had hired the services of Healthcare Management Partners LLC from Philadelphia to provide operational oversight and management services. He said that the firms’ goal was for it to become more efficient and more financially responsible.

Connor said the move would help streamline processes and would involve reductions in the workforce due to budget modifications. However, he did stress that the timing of jobs losses and the number of people who would find themselves out of a job was not something that had been determined yet.

Healthcare Management Partners already has experience working with a number of other nursing homes as well as hospitals and has a good record of turning round financial problems by making them more efficient.

The union that represents the Loretto employees, 1199SEIU has told of how it does not expect the job losses to affect front line staff. However, they are expecting management jobs to be affected. Vice president Ruth Heller said “We have protections in our contract and they would need to give us notice and justification if front line workers were affected.” She also said that Loretto are not the only nursing home trying to save money and streamline operations and that this was down to the fact that payments were shrinking.

Most nursing homes rely on funding from Medicaid with around 50 percent of Lorettos’s $116.2 million turnover in 2010 coming from the Medicaid funding. However, most nursing homes often complain that their costs are not covered by the funding. In 2010, Loretto showed a deficit of over three quarters of a million dollars.

At the moment the Mr. Bruce Buchanan who is Healthcare Management Partner’s managing director is acting as chief executive officer and president of Loretto and he has plenty of experience with over 30 years in the industry. He has shown his ability to turn around the fortunes of failing hospitals and nursing homes in his capacity as chief executive officer of both the Phoenix Baptist Hospital and the Northeast Baptist Hospital.

The previous president of Loretto, Mr. Michael J. Sullivan, resigned in July 2011 and the interim replacement was senior vice president Sally Berry.

Because the population in the U.S. is aging, the health care industry will no doubt be one of the strongest markets for jobs for quite some time. This can be clearly seen in the job openings in Hudson Valley as many of them are in local nursing homes, medical centers and physicians’ offices. The good news is that it is not only nursing positions that are available in the health care industry. There is also a need for accountants, administrators and technology experts.

Over the past few years, many of these health care providers have been changing over to electronic systems so there is also a need for people to work on this. Receptionists and medical secretaries are also going to be needed for as long as the health care sector remains strong.

While there is a requirement for non medical staff, the number of nursing jobs and other medical jobs that are posted is very high. Health care providers in the area are always looking for physical therapy assistants as well as certified nursing assistants and registered nurses. The good news is that there are numerous courses offered for these positions in colleges throughout the United States. However, it is worth noting that there is a lot of competition for these positions and this is down to the fact that there are many hospitals merging with each other and downsizing. Another reason is that people are working longer so a lot of older nurses are staying on past retirement age.

Anyone looking for a job these days should check out the various medical facilities in their area because they may be surprised at the wide variety of positions that are available. For example, the Crystal Run Healthcare recently advertised positions such as registered nurse, physician assistant, licensed practical nurse, business intelligence analyst, and accounts receivable clerk while Orange Regional Medical Center had positions available for a benefits supervisor, nursing assistant, psychiatric technician and a medical staff credentials coordinator.

Hahnemann University Hospital is defying convention at the moment by moving away from lower paid staff and hiring staff that will be on a higher income. This may sound strange to those in business but to the chief executive officer of the hospital Mr. Michael Halter, the move makes perfect sense. He believes that hiring better paid workers will benefit the hospital in the long run because it will entice more customers and therefore more money, and it will also create a sense of loyalty among staff for when the economy gets back on track.

Mr. Halter said that a pilot study showed that patient care improved when all nursing staff were registered nurses as opposed to using a combination of registered nurses and nursing assistants for example. For that reason, Hahnemann University Hospital will now become an all registered nurse hospital. It is expected that this change will ensure that finances improve because of the fact that quality is rewarded by insurance companies who should change their reimbursement policies.

Halter said that he expects the transition to be complete within six to twelve months and believes that this is the perfect way to help the hospital grow. During the pilot which took place in two different units of the hospital, it was possible to shift certified nursing assistants to other units within the hospital but it will not be too long before people will need to be laid off. At the moment there are 600 registered nurses working at the hospital but between fifty and sixty more will have to be hired.

However, as there are 75 CNAs working at the hospital who are likely to be laid off, unions are opposing this change. The CNAs are therefore planning industrial action from next Tuesday afternoon (14th February 2012). Henry Nicholas who is president of District 1199C of AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) stated that patient care will be affected by this move as patients will be forced to wait for help with their dinner or to get a bedpan, for example. He said that this decision was morally wrong and that the hospital has a certain responsibility to the CNAs who have been serving there for quite some time. “There is no legal question. It’s a moral question. It is unjust to throw these people out who have been there for 50 years and beyond just on a humbug” he said.

Nonetheless, Mr. Halter disagreed and said about the CNAs – “I care about these people. They are good people but my responsibility is really to the patient, because they come in and they turn their care over to us”.

With our life expectancy being much higher than it used to be, we are now seeing an increased need for health care for the elderly. This has lead to an increased requirement for staff such as nurses, surgeons and other medical professionals. The recession has seen a number of people being laid off but the health care industry has increased its number of staff. By 2018 it is thought that there will be a further 4 million people working in the health care sector. On the other hand, it is expected that the number of people working in the manufacturing industry will have decreased by 1.2 million over the same period.

Over the last two years the health care sector has accounted for 22 percent of employment growth and this was almost twice as much for manufacturing. So while this is bad news for those in the manufacturing industry, it is good news for anyone who wants to pursue a career in health care. And it is also good news for the economy as a whole.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, around one of every four Americans will be sixty five or older by the year 2050. Chief investment strategist, Jim Paulsen from Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis stated that “The demographic story for health care remains good and will get better”. However, those who want to invest in health care should beware.

President Obama’s health care plan is to be looked at by the Supreme Court in March 2012 and this law requires all Americans to buy health insurance or pay a fine. However, Republican candidates for the White House have already stated that even if the law is passed, they will abolish it if they win the election. What this means is that the health care sector will face uncertainty for some time so anyone interested in buying stocks or shares would need to be very careful.

A new study has revealed that those who have jobs that are not very physically demanding and who work for long hours are more likely to become obese. This is bad news for those in the nursing profession. In fact, the study from researchers at the University Of Maryland School Of Nursing actually carried out a survey on approximately 2,100 female nurses and of those surveyed, over half of them were found to be obese. It was also found that nurse’s health was affected by their exhausting schedules, as well as patient care quality.

It was stated that shift work and long working week’s can interfere with the quality of sleep and this can have an adverse affect on health, which can in turn cause the risk of obesity to increase. The study’s lead researcher Mr. Kihye Han said that there was a need to change the regular twelve hour shift that is common to nursing jobs. It was also stated that health care facilities such as hospitals should be doing more to support their nursing staff by offering programs which would help them learn how to reduce fatigue, cope with being sleep deprived and how to adapt to various work shifts.

It was also stated that if these employers wanted to decrease the risk of health problems and obesity for their nursing staff, they should try to insure that there are more healthy options available and that staff get enough time to eat a healthy meal. There is also the problem of insufficient patient care when nursing staff are overworked, sleep deprived and suffering from their own health care problems because the risk of human error increases.

The Red Cross chapter in Santa Rosa, California began a nurse assistant education program in 1993 which has since produced approximately 1,600 graduates. Even more impressive is the fact that the number of students in the program has increased by more than 100% over the last two years, with 350 trainees and a waiting list. The Red Cross runs three simultaneous sessions consisting of 160 hours of instruction at a cost of just under $1,400.

The Red Cross program is typical of what’s being seen in today’s nurse assistant field. Programs are springing up at Red Cross chapters all around the country as well as community colleges, nursing schools, hospitals, and public health clinics. Even private companies that provide in-home nurse staffing have begun operating their own nurse assistant education programs to keep up with the demand. And that demand, which is expected to result in the hiring of 1.3 million nurse assistants over the next six years, is not expected to slow down anytime soon.

Not for Everyone

Many of the Santa Rosa graduates head directly to nursing homes and assisted living centers upon graduation. That’s true whether or not they are continuing their education to become licensed practical nurses. The reason for this migration to such facilities rests in the fact that America’s aging population is the main driving force behind the need for more nurse assistants. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities hire the most nurse assistants because their needs are greatest.

Understanding that, it’s easy to see that being a nurse assistant is not a job for everyone. It’s certainly not glamorous by any stretch of imagination. It’s also not much fun if you have a low tolerance for elderly patients, individuals lacking the mental capacity to understand the care you’re providing, and people who are fairly immobile and require your assistance. It is a job that requires compassion, diligence, and a great deal of physical and emotional strength. But for those who are fruitful in this field, is a job that’s incredibly rewarding.

What to Expect

Students and new graduates from nurse assistant programs need to be prepared that they are entering the healthcare field at the very bottom. The nurse assistant is one of the entry-level jobs many individuals use as a springboard to more advanced careers. A typical salary in the Northern California region is between $12 and $16 per hour; some employers offer excellent benefits while others don’t. Nurse assistants who love their career choice and don’t seek higher education can make an excellent living throughout their lifetimes. Those who want to move further up the ladder can continue their education as they work.

If you’re interested in becoming a nurse assistant there’s probably a program or two in your local area. You might start by contacting your local Red Cross, community college, or hospital, and ask for their recommendations. In no time at all, you can be certified and get right to work.
